Diesel particulate filter: role, price and inspection

Diesel particulate filter (DPF): how it works, symptoms of a blocked DPF, cleaning prices and what the Belgian vehicle inspection measures.

The diesel particulate filter, or DPF, traps the soot produced by combustion — around 99% of fine particles. It cleans itself while you drive: that is regeneration. In Belgium, its condition has been measured at the vehicle inspection since 1 July 2022, and the exact scope of the test is not the same in all three Regions.

That last line is what catches most people out. Plenty of drivers discover the DPF the day the inspection puts a remark on their certificate, with a four-figure garage quote right behind it. Here is how the part works, what ruins it, and what Belgian rules actually require.

What does a diesel particulate filter do?

The particulate filter traps the soot produced by combustion before it leaves the exhaust. It holds back roughly 99% of fine particles — the ones small enough to travel deep into the lungs.

Technically it is a ceramic block drilled with blind channels. Exhaust gases pass through the porous walls, the particles stay caught inside. The DPF sits just after the catalytic converter in the exhaust line, and it has equipped every diesel sold in Europe since the Euro 5 standard.

The health case is not theoretical. According to the European Environment Agency, air pollution was linked to roughly 8,950 premature deaths in Belgium in 2018. That figure is what pushed the European Union to impose a serious filter check instead of the old smoke opacity test.

How does DPF regeneration work?

Regeneration burns off the soot stored in the filter. It triggers on its own when a pressure sensor detects the filter loading up: the ECU injects extra fuel to raise exhaust temperature, and the soot oxidises.

The catch fits in one sentence: it needs heat. If you only do five-kilometre trips around town, the exhaust never reaches the required temperature, regeneration aborts, and the filter loads cycle after cycle. That is the leading cause of clogging in Belgium, where the average commute is heavily urban.

In practice the fix is well known and free: Touring recommends holding the engine around 3,000 rpm for a good fifteen minutes, meaning 100 to 120 km/h on the motorway in an intermediate gear. A Brussels-Namur round trip does the job nicely. Worth knowing too: a new DPF needs about 150 km of running-in before it works at full efficiency.

What are the symptoms of a blocked DPF?

A clogged DPF shows up first as a dashboard light, then as a clear loss of power. The engine drops into limp mode to protect itself, fuel consumption climbs, and pick-up goes soft.

Other signals to watch: a rough idle, a smell of burnt fuel after a drive, a cooling fan that runs on long after you stop, and sometimes a rising engine oil level — the fuel injected for regeneration ends up in the sump when the cycle never completes.

What you should not do is ignore the light for months. A saturated filter pressurises the whole exhaust line, which wears out the turbo and the EGR valve. You then replace three parts instead of one. And it is worth being honest about the limits of self-diagnosis: a cracked or ash-saturated filter shows nothing on the dashboard, only on a diagnostic tool.

What does the Belgian inspection measure on the particulate filter?

Since 1 July 2022, Belgian inspection centres count the number of particles emitted at the exhaust — the PN test, for particle number. Under 250,000 particles per cm³ earns a green certificate with no remark; above one million, the defect must be repaired.

Belgium was, alongside the Netherlands, one of the first countries to impose this test. It targets two things: faulty filters, and the fraud of simply removing the DPF — a car runs perfectly well without one, and the old opacity test saw nothing. Euro 4 and older diesels, which have no DPF, are not concerned: they remain subject to the opacity test alone.

Where it gets complicated is that vehicle inspection is a regional competence. The scope of the test is therefore not identical on either side of the language border:

Two practical consequences follow. First, a Euro 5a diesel registered between 2011 and 2013 escapes the PN test in Wallonia but not in Flanders or Brussels. Having the car inspected at a Walloon centre is possible, but Touring flags the trade-off: the vehicle must then continue to be inspected in Wallonia. Second, Flanders explicitly excluded the pre-sale inspection from the 12-month reprieve — so a vehicle that fails the particle test cannot be resold until it is put right. If you are buying a used diesel, that is the point to check before signing.

The test itself is included in the inspection price. In 2026, a periodic passenger-car inspection sits around €50 to €55 depending on the Region, with a €10 to €15 supplement for diesels fitted with a DPF.

How much does DPF cleaning or replacement cost?

From €80 for a forced regeneration with a diagnostic tool, up to €2,500 for a fitted original filter. The gap is enormous because it covers four very different jobs, and because not every clogged DPF is a dead DPF.

A soot-loaded filter can be cleaned. A filter saturated with ash — the incombustible residue from engine oil additives — only cleans imperfectly, and a cracked or melted filter has to be replaced. The prior diagnosis determines everything else, which is a good reason to ask for a measured back-pressure reading before accepting a replacement quote.

The calculation that really counts, on the Belgian used market: a 2013-2014 Euro 5b diesel trades around €4,000 to €7,000 depending on model and mileage. A fitted original DPF at €1,500 therefore represents a fifth to a third of the car's value. That is the point where the question stops being "should I repair this?" and becomes "should I keep this car?". Our used-car budget brackets give you the benchmark.

Do petrol engines have a particulate filter too?

Yes, since the Euro 6c standard. Direct-injection petrol engines also emit fine particles and carry a filter, generally called a GPF or OPF (gasoline or Otto particulate filter).

The difference comes down to temperature. A petrol engine runs a markedly hotter exhaust than a diesel, so regeneration happens almost continuously and goes unnoticed. The result is that a GPF clogs far less, and blockages stay rare outside purely urban, very short-distance use.

One practical point: in Belgium, the inspection's particle counter test targets diesel engines. A failing GPF therefore does not, today, carry the same sanction as a dead diesel DPF.

DPF, catalytic converter and EGR valve: who does what

Three different parts, three roles, and a confusion you hear constantly at the garage counter. The catalytic converter turns gases (CO, unburnt hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides) into less harmful ones. The DPF transforms nothing: it traps solid particles.

The EGR valve plays yet another game: it feeds part of the exhaust gas back into the intake to lower combustion temperature and limit nitrogen oxide formation. Its weakness is that it reintroduces soot into the engine, and a clogged EGR loads the DPF faster.

Hence a simple rule when a quote lands: a DPF that re-clogs a few thousand kilometres after a clean almost always signals a problem upstream — EGR, injectors, differential pressure sensor or an internal leak. Replacing the filter without treating the cause means paying twice. Touring notes that some cars kept exceeding the thresholds even with a brand-new filter, precisely because of internal contamination.

On a car you are keeping: treat the DPF as a consumable that depends on your usage, not a part to forget about. A half-hour motorway run once a month, servicing on schedule with the oil the manufacturer specifies, and a quick reaction to the first warning light cover the vast majority of cases.

On a used diesel you are considering: ask for the latest inspection certificate and read the particle line. A remark between 250,000 and 1 million particles/cm³ is not a failure, but it is a filter near the end of its life and a quote on the way. On a vehicle over ten years old, that quote often passes the point of reason.

Over a short distance, yes, but the engine goes into limp mode: power drops and fuel consumption climbs. Driving for weeks in that state eventually damages the turbo and the EGR valve. As soon as the DPF light comes on, try a motorway regeneration run, then book a garage.

A DPF generally lasts 150,000 to 250,000 km on a car that regularly drives on open roads. On purely urban use, it can clog before 100,000 km. Ash never burns off: it builds up and eventually saturates the filter, even a well-maintained one.

No. Removing or defeating the DPF makes the vehicle non-compliant with its type approval, and the inspection's particle counter test exists precisely to catch that fraud. It is the reason the European Union pushed the measure through: a European study had shown that a large share of the diesel fleet was running with a faulty or missing filter.
