Renault Clio
Versatile benchmarkThe most complete balance of reliability, comfort and running cost. The E-Tech hybrid sips fuel and stays smooth in town.
The best city car in Belgium in 2026 is the Renault Clio, ahead of the Toyota Yaris hybrid (the most frugal) and the Dacia Sandero (the cheapest). We rank on urban running cost, reliability and appeal, with Belgian list prices in hand.
Overall score /100 — urban running cost, reliability, appeal
Our top 8, ranked by overall score /100 — urban running cost, reliability, appeal. Indicative figures, updated July 2026.
Indicative scores and figures (Belgian market), entry version without options. List or used price to be verified at the dealer before purchase. No model pays to be listed or ranked higher.
In town, the full hybrid (Yaris, Clio E-Tech) uses the least fuel and stays hassle-free: the best choice for heavy urban use. Simple petrol (Sandero, Fabia) keeps the lowest purchase price.
Affordable electric (ë-C3, e-208) makes sense as a second urban car or if you charge at home: €4–6 per 100 km versus €8–11 on petrol. On regular long trips, a small electric’s range is still tight.
The Toyota Yaris hybrid leads reliability surveys (TÜV, JD Power) thanks to technology proven for over twenty years, with a very low running cost. The Mazda 2 and Dacia Sandero (Renault mechanicals) follow closely.
What we’d avoid: complex turbocharged engines on entry versions, more sensitive to intensive urban use. For peace of mind and the bill, a Toyota full hybrid or a simple naturally aspirated engine remain the safe bets.
Yes for two to four people with measured luggage, provided you target a generous boot. The Škoda Fabia (380 L), Renault Clio (391 L) and VW Polo (351 L) swallow a couple’s or small family’s cases without playing Tetris.
In practice, the limit is not the road but the volume: a Yaris (286 L) is fine for a weekend, less so for two weeks with four. What we’d avoid: overloading the roof at the expense of consumption. For regular family use, look at our SUV ranking instead.
The score out of 100 aggregates urban running cost (real consumption, servicing, insurance), measured reliability, in-town appeal, space and resale value. Purchase price counts, but five-year cost weighs more.
The Renault Clio leads on balance, with no weak point. The Sandero would win on price alone; the Yaris on frugality alone. The verdict depends on your priority: budget, consumption or versatility.
