Which electric car really has the longest range in Belgium?

The Mercedes CLA electric, at 792 km WLTP. It is the highest figure homologated for a compact saloon sold in Belgium, and it earned the car the 2026 Car of the Year title. In real-world use, expect closer to 630 km.

The gap between the catalogue figure and the one on your dashboard is the only thing that matters here. The WLTP cycle runs at mild temperatures, without sustained motorway work and without heating: on Belgian roads, between 120 km/h on the E19 and 2 °C January mornings, the loss settles around 20% as an annual average and climbs to 30-35% in deep winter. That is the ratio we apply to every model in this ranking, identically, to obtain a comparable estimated real-world range from one brand to the next. We do not claim to have measured them ourselves: these are calculated estimates, not test figures. On that basis the CLA keeps its lead — 630 real kilometres against 560 for the Tesla Model 3 Long Range — but the gap narrows from 90 to 70 km.

What does a kilometre of range actually cost?

Between €82 and €127 on the Belgian catalogue, depending on the model. This is the ratio that really settles this ranking: divide the Belgian starting price by the estimated real-world range and the order changes completely.

The Tesla Model 3 Long Range RWD comes out on top at €82 per kilometre (€45,970 for 560 real kilometres), just ahead of the Mercedes CLA at €84 and the Renault Scenic E-Tech, also at €84. At the other end, the BMW i4 eDrive40 asks €127 per kilometre: €62,000 for 490 real kilometres, which is 70 km less than the Tesla for €16,000 more. The kilometre of range costs 55% more there. You are paying for the finish, the chassis and the badge — all legitimate reasons to buy an i4, but none of them is called range.

Four criteria make up the score out of 100: estimated real-world range (40%), cost per kilometre of range (35%), charging speed (15%) and the density of the Belgian after-sales network (10%). Catalogue prices recorded on 21 August 2026 from Moniteur Automobile and the manufacturers’ official Belgian sites.

Is it really worth paying for another 100 km of range?

Beyond 500 real kilometres, rarely. The premium for a big battery pays back poorly in Belgium, where the average commute barely exceeds 20 km and the 400 km diagonal from Ostend to Arlon takes a single stop.

In practice, here is how it works out. A driver covering 15,000 km a year on trips under 60 km will charge at home three or four times a week whatever the battery size: an EV with 450 real kilometres covers the whole year, bar two or three holiday departures. Going from 490 to 630 real kilometres costs between €6,000 and €10,000 — and means carrying around 150 kg of extra cells the rest of the time, with the consumption and tyre wear that follow. What we would avoid: buying the catalogue’s largest battery to cover two trips a year, when a hotel night and a twenty-minute stop cost less.

The counter-argument exists, and it is a serious one. A large battery ages better: at equal mileage it goes through fewer full cycles, and calendar degradation is spread across a wider capacity. If you keep the car eight years, the residual-value gap claws back part of the premium.

What long range costs in tax, region by region

Since 2026, no Belgian region exempts electric cars entirely any more — and two of them now tax weight, which hits large batteries precisely.

Flanders ended its exemption on 1 January 2026: a new or used electric car registered in the Flemish Region now pays a single flat registration tax of €61.50. Wallonia changed its logic on 1 July 2025: its registration tax no longer depends on fiscal horsepower alone but combines power, emissions and maximum authorised mass. The "electric" fuel coefficient remains very favourable, but a two-tonne saloon with a big battery pays appreciably more there than an electric city car. In Brussels, the annual road tax on electric cars stays capped at around €101, and the registration tax at the regional minimum.

The direct consequence: the ranking does not move, but your registration bill does. Check the maximum authorised mass on the certificate of conformity before signing in Wallonia.

Long range and company cars: what changes in 2026?

Nothing in principle, a great deal on the calendar. Electric cars remain 100% deductible for orders placed before 1 January 2027: this is the last full year before the taper.

The trap lies elsewhere, and it is specific to this ranking. The benefit in kind is calculated on catalogue value, not on range: a zero-emission car takes the 4% floor coefficient, applied to six sevenths of a new vehicle’s catalogue value. The figure that really counts: a Tesla Model 3 Long Range at €45,970 falls under the legal floor and costs €1,690 a year in benefit in kind — the 2026 minimum — while a BMW i4 eDrive40 at €62,000 costs about €2,126. That is €436 more a year, for 70 fewer real kilometres of range.

Put differently, on a company car long range is not paid for at purchase alone: it is paid every month on the driver’s payslip. The figures above are indicative calculations made in August 2026; the FPS Finance publishes the reference coefficient and the floor amount each year.
