Hyundai Tucson
Best all-rounderCabin space, an efficient hybrid and a long manufacturer warranty. The safest compromise in the segment, with no major drawback.
The best SUV in Belgium in 2026 is the Hyundai Tucson hybrid for a private purchase, and the Tesla Model Y as a company car. The SUV is still the country’s best-selling body style: we rank all powertrains, on family versatility, Belgian running cost and reliability.
Overall score /100 — versatility, BE running cost, reliability
Our top 8, ranked by overall score /100 — versatility, be running cost, reliability. Indicative figures, updated July 2026.
Indicative scores and figures (Belgian market), entry version without options. List or used price to be verified at the dealer before purchase. No model pays to be listed or ranked higher.
For private mixed city-and-road use, the non-plug-in hybrid offers the best balance: 4.5 to 5.5 l/100 km in practice, with no charging constraint. It is the powertrain to prioritise first on a family SUV.
For a company car, the calculation tilts to electric: as of this article (June 2026), Belgian taxation reserves high deductibility for electric vehicles on new orders. Diesel only makes sense now on very high motorway mileage, and its servicing (DPF, AdBlue) eats into the gap.
Not always. Value for money is measured over five years: fuel, servicing, insurance and resale matter as much as purchase price. The Dacia Bigster undercuts on purchase, but a pricier Toyota RAV4 catches up on residual value and reliability.
The figure that really counts is total cost of ownership. What we’d avoid: comparing two SUVs on their entry price alone. A thirsty engine or steep depreciation quickly erases a €3,000 dealer advantage.
For the best raw value, a recent used car (2 to 4 years) often wins: the steepest depreciation has passed and you reach a higher model for the same budget. New stays defensible on low-depreciation brands (Dacia, Toyota) or via an aggressive manufacturer offer.
In practice, a well-maintained two-to-three-year-old Peugeot 3008 or Hyundai Tucson costs 25 to 35% less than new for almost identical use. What we’d avoid: a used car with no service book, especially on a turbo petrol engine known for weaknesses (the pre-2020 PureTech 1.2).
The score out of 100 aggregates consistent criteria: versatility and space, real consumption or range, Belgian five-year running cost, measured reliability (TÜV, ADAC) and resale value. It is relative to the SUV segment, not directly comparable to a city car.
The Hyundai Tucson leads because it maximises these criteria in one place, with no marked weakness. The Tesla Model Y dominates as soon as you reason as a company. To fine-tune by exact budget, the comparison tool puts models side by side.
