Private Car Leasing in Belgium: a Rental, Not a Purchase
Private leasing in Belgium is a rental with no purchase option. Terms, early-exit costs worked out and sector safeguards, recorded on 17/10/2026.
Private leasing in Belgium is a long-term rental: you pay a fixed rent, the car stays with the lessor, and there is no purchase option at the end of the contract. Fewer than 15,000 contracts are running (January 2026). The rent attracts, but it is the exit from the contract, not the monthly payment, that tells you whether the deal is good.
Private leasing, also called private lease, is an operational lease between an individual living in Belgium and a lessor, for a term and mileage fixed at the start, with rent, maintenance and taxes included depending on the formula.
Is private leasing a loan or a rental?
A rental. The sector's code of conduct, dated October 2019, says so plainly: in operational leasing, ownership stays with the lessor and the contract never includes a purchase option. Renault and Kia also write it on their Belgian pages. The car goes back.
That sets it apart from the balloon loan, where you are the owner from day one and can keep the car by paying a final, higher instalment fixed at the start.
| Formula | Owner | End of contract | Resale-value risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private lease (operational rental) | the lessor | return, purchase impossible | carried by the lessor |
| Balloon loan | you, from the start | buy with the final instalment, or return the car | carried by the dealer if you return it |
| Standard loan | you | the car is yours | carried by you |

Less than 0.3% of the car fleet is on a private lease
Almost nobody. La Libre counts fewer than 15,000 contracts running in January 2026. In 2022, RTBF, quoting the Renta federation, spoke of about 17,000 cars out of six million, which is 0.28% of the fleet. With the 2026 figure set against the same fleet, you land at 0.25%.
La Libre sees a national trait: Belgians like to own their car, whereas the formula works very well in neighbouring countries.
Renault, Kia and Arval publish no rent at all
Less than you would expect. On 17 October 2026, we read the Belgian pages of three players. None publishes a monthly rent.
| Belgian page | Term | Mileage | Early exit | Rent published |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Renault (financed by Axus) | 24 to 72 months | up to 160,000 km over the contract, changeable once for free | possible after 12 billed months: 3 months' indemnity plus 250 euros | none, list price only |
| Kia (lessor Arval Belgium) | 36 to 60 months | adjustable, no figure | termination indemnity charged, amount not published | none, list price only |
| Arval (offer for individuals) | chosen at step 2 of the process | chosen at step 2 of the process | not stated on the page | none, "no deposit" |
Pages read on 17 October 2026: Renault Belgium and Kia Belgium, plus the Arval Belgium page for individuals.
This gap has a practical consequence. To compare two offers, you have to ask for both, in writing, with the same term and the same mileage. Otherwise you are comparing brochures.
The rent covers maintenance and taxes, not fuel
According to the Renault and Kia pages and Moniteur Automobile (25 July 2024), the rent of a full formula covers most of the car's running life. The content still varies from one brand to another.
In the rent, generally:
- maintenance and repairs, with an extended warranty at Renault;
- the registration tax and the annual road tax;
- summer tyres under normal wear;
- 24-hour roadside assistance in Europe;
- a replacement vehicle, on conditions that differ between brands;
- liability insurance, legal protection and damage cover, depending on the formula and the insurer chosen.
Outside the rent: fuel, fines and, at both brands, winter tyres, offered as an option.
Lighter formulas exist. D'Ieteren offers an "Easy Lease" limited to maintenance and repairs, and Kia says, according to La Libre, that leaving out the replacement vehicle and the tyres can take about a hundred euros off the monthly rent. Over 48 months, that is about 4,800 euros. An attractive rent can therefore also be obtained by removing services you will have to pay for elsewhere.
Are regional taxes included in the rent?
Yes, at Renault as at Kia, the registration tax and the annual tax are in the rent. Yet those taxes are not calculated the same way in Wallonia, Brussels and Flanders: see our explanation of the registration tax and of the Walloon road tax.
So ask the lessor to itemise the tax share of the rent and the Region used to calculate it. None of the pages read says.
An early exit costs 1,150 euros or 5,400 euros depending on the contract
This is the question the rent hides. Take a 48-month contract at 300 euros a month, an editorial example and not a real offer.
The sector code allows exit from the first day of the second year. The indemnity cannot exceed 50% of the remaining rents when more than six months are left. At Renault, the Belgian page announces 3 months' indemnity plus 250 euros in fees, after 12 billed months.
| Exit requested | Rents remaining | Code ceiling (50%) | Published Renault scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| After 12 months | 36 | 5,400 euros | 1,150 euros |
| After 24 months | 24 | 3,600 euros | 1,150 euros |
| After 36 months | 12 | 1,800 euros | 1,150 euros |
Editorial calculation, 17 October 2026, on an assumed rent of 300 euros. The Renault scale is read as 3 rents plus 250 euros: the page does not detail how the indemnity is calculated. The ceilings are maximums, not prices.
That is what the code allows: up to 18 rents of indemnity one year after signing, against three at Renault. The gap between the ceiling and the published scale is 4,250 euros in the first year. A lessor that does not publish its scale can, legally, stay closer to the ceiling. That changes everything.
Is leasing cheaper than a loan?
It depends on which loan you compare it to.
RTBF (31 March 2022) gave the example of a petrol Opel Moka at 28,000 euros after discounts: 595 euros a month with standard financing over four years, 453 euros with an all-inclusive private lease. Over 48 months, the loan costs 28,560 euros, the lease 21,744 euros, a gap of 6,816 euros. The calculation is appealing and incomplete: the first buyer owns a car they keep, the second pays for use and hands back the keys.
La Libre, in January 2026, observes the opposite against a balloon loan: the lease rent is clearly higher, but the two products are not comparable, since the balloon leaves you the ownership and the option to keep the car.
Test-Achats, quoted by RTBF, warns against prolonged leasing: keeping a car on lease for eight or nine years is not a good plan.
What does the sector code of conduct protect you from?
The October 2019 code of conduct, published on the website of Febelfin, the financial-sector federation, sets minimum rules for contracts concluded from 1 October 2019 with a consumer living in Belgium. It is not a law, and nothing in the text read says which lessors have signed up to it: ask the question.
Points to check before signing:
- the offer must be dated, carry its expiry date and be sent before signing with all the standard documents;
- the contract must state the price of an excess kilometre, or a maximum price, and the maximum personal contribution per claim;
- it must state that buying the vehicle is impossible and refer to the Renta standard for acceptable wear;
- any rent advertised must name the lessor, the brand, the model, the term and the services included;
- in case of late payment, you must be given a reminder and 15 days before anything follows;
- contracts of less than 12 months are not covered.
The text provides no general right of withdrawal. Once the contract is signed, you are committed.

Who does private leasing make sense for?
For one precise profile: someone who changes car every three or four years, knows their mileage to within a few thousand kilometres and wants a stable monthly budget with no money down. In that case the formula shifts the resale-value risk onto the lessor, which matters for an electric car whose market is moving fast.
It is a poor fit for drivers who cover a lot of miles, keep their car for ten years or want to be able to buy it. For those drivers, a well-chosen used car is often more coherent, and beginners will find their bearings in our guide to the first car.

To compare models before choosing a formula, the comparison tool ranks the cars on the Belgian catalogue.
