Annual road tax in Wallonia: the full scale

The official Walloon annual road tax scale, from 107.18 € to 2,741.77 €, with a calculator, the LPG supplement and the electric flat rate. Amounts as of 17 September 2026.

ParJulien V.9 min de lecture

In Wallonia the annual road tax is read off a table, not worked out from a formula. It starts at 107.18 € for an engine not exceeding 750 cc and climbs to 2,741.77 € at 20 fiscal horsepower, then 149.56 € per additional horsepower. The only criterion is displacement.

The road tax is the annual regional tax due for as long as a plate stays registered in someone's name. It has nothing to do with the registration tax, which is paid once. The calculator below reproduces the official SPW Finances scale, bracket by bracket.

A full hybrid and a plug-in hybrid both keep a combustion engine: the scale applies to its displacement, and the fiscal horsepower in box P.6 is the reference figure.

Assumptions and limits of this calculation
  • The calculation covers the Walloon Region only, meaning the home address of the plate holder, not the place of purchase.
  • Amounts are indexed every 1 July. The multi-year total shown assumes a frozen scale and will therefore fall short of reality.
  • The two 250 € reductions for large families and single-parent families apply to the registration tax, not to this annual tax.
  • Exemptions (people with disabilities, taxis, agricultural vehicles, test vehicles) are not taken into account.
  • Lorries, vans, trailers, buses, coaches and trade plates follow other tables and fall outside this calculator.

How much is the annual road tax in Wallonia?

Between 107.18 € and 2,741.77 € for the vast majority of cars on Belgian roads, and above that ceiling only for very large engines. The amounts come from the scale valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, additional décimes included, published by SPW Finances.

One example, with two cars you pass every day on the E411. A 999 cc petrol city car falls in the 951 to 1,150 cc bracket, so 6 fiscal horsepower, and pays 193.91 € a year. A 1,995 cc diesel saloon falls in the 1,951 to 2,150 cc bracket, so 11 fiscal horsepower, and pays 561.00 € a year. The gap is 367.09 € every year, and 1,835.45 € over five years of ownership.

Both cars use the same roads, weigh roughly the same in service and emit fairly similar amounts of CO2. The scale takes no interest in any of that.

How is the Walloon road tax calculated?

By reading, not by multiplying. The official table pairs a displacement bracket, a number of fiscal horsepower and an amount, and all you have to do is find your line.

Two boxes on the registration certificate are enough. Box P.1 carries the displacement in cubic centimetres; box P.6 carries fiscal horsepower directly. The two should normally point to the same line. If they diverge, on an imported engine or an old technical sheet for instance, box P.6 is what the administration uses, and that is the figure to enter in the calculator.

One detail deserves saying, because it always surprises: the table obeys no arithmetic rule of its own. The brackets run 200 cc almost everywhere, except two of them, at 15 and 19 fiscal horsepower, which run 300. The amounts climb in irregular jumps. This is an inherited scale, not a calculation.

What amount for which displacement?

Here is the full scale, copied without alteration from the SPW Finances document. The motorhome column applies to vehicles treated as cars and registered from 1 January 2022, outside the commercial-vehicle regime.

The table also reads backwards, and that is where it earns its keep before a purchase. Here is what the most common engines on the Belgian market cost every year, with their real displacement.

Usual displacements for these engine families, applied to the scale above. The five-year total assumes a frozen scale and will therefore be exceeded, since the amounts are reindexed every year.

Can one cubic centimetre cost 643 euros?

Yes, and the step is plainly visible in the table.

Between 1,950 and 1,951 cc you change bracket: 10 fiscal horsepower become 11, and the tax moves from 432.30 € to 561.00 €. That is 128.70 € more per year, 643.50 € over five years, for one cubic centimetre. The same thing happens at every boundary, and two of them are genuinely brutal: going from 3,050 to 3,051 cc costs 333.16 € a year, and from 3,250 to 3,251 cc costs 333.44 €.

This is the point that decides things in a showroom. Two trim levels of the same model, one at 1,950 cc and the other at 1,998 cc, are two almost identical cars to drive and two very different cars to keep.

Small city cars parked along a Belgian street
On the Walloon annual tax, small displacement is the only argument that counts. Weight and CO2 play no part in the calculation.

What do an electric car, an LPG car and a motorcycle pay?

Three separate regimes, and they look nothing alike.

An electric or hydrogen car is taxed on a single basis of four fiscal horsepower or fewer, so 107.18 €, whatever its power output. SPW Finances says so in plain terms on its electric vehicle page. An 80 kW city car and a 300 kW SUV therefore pay the same amount. The gap against a 2.0 diesel reaches 453.82 € a year.

An LPG vehicle pays the usual scale, plus an additional road tax of 89.16 € up to 7 CV, 148.68 € from 8 to 13 CV and 208.20 € from 14 CV. This supplement is neither indexed nor subject to the additional décime. On a 6 CV city car it takes the bill from 193.91 € to 283.07 €, a 46 % increase that weighs heavily against the price per litre.

Motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles are exempt if displacement does not exceed 250 cc or if the electric motor does not exceed 11 kW. Above that, a single amount of 76.03 € applies. Finally, a historic vehicle over 30 years old pays 48.61 €, which is also the minimum tax set by article 10 of the Code of taxes assimilated to income taxes.

What is the difference with the registration tax?

Two taxes, two calculation bases with nothing left in common since July 2025.

The registration tax is paid once, on a change of holder. Since the reform of 1 July 2025, Wallonia multiplies a base amount drawn from kilowatts by CO2, by maximum authorised mass and by an energy coefficient. We set out that calculation and its steps in our article on the registration tax and its three regional versions.

The road tax stayed on displacement. A Walloon buyer can therefore pay dearly at registration because the vehicle is heavy and emits a lot, then pay little every year because the engine is small. The reverse happens too.

One point often lost along the way, and it costs money to those who miss it: the two Walloon reductions of 250 €, the one for large families and the one for single-parent families that took effect on 1 July 2026, apply to the registration tax. Not to the annual tax. Several Belgian pages present the grid of one as though it were the grid of the other; always check which tax the table in front of you is describing.

Is the road tax the same in Brussels and Flanders?

No, and it would be dishonest to suggest this calculator answers for them.

Brussels also taxes fiscal horsepower, but sets its own amounts and indexes them every 1 July, as Brussels Fiscality states, with current rates running from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. We were unable to read the full Brussels grid, horsepower by horsepower, on an official source, and we would rather publish no figure at all than copy an unverifiable one for an amount you are going to pay.

Flanders does not work that way at all. Its annual tax follows an environmental logic based on CO2, the Euro standard and fuel, the same as its registration tax, and the Walloon scale does not map onto it. The Vlaams Belastingportaal publishes an official simulator for that case.

The rule that settles matters applies to all three Regions: the tax is owed to the Region where the plate holder lives, not where the car was bought and not where it is driven.

The mistakes that throw the expected amount off

Five confusions come back again and again, and each takes thirty seconds to fix.

  • Reading power in kilowatts. Box P.2 is for the registration tax. The Walloon annual tax ignores kilowatts: it reads displacement in P.1 and fiscal horsepower in P.6.
  • Assuming a hybrid escapes the scale. A full hybrid and a plug-in hybrid both keep a combustion engine, so a displacement, so a line in the table. Only a pure electric gets the flat rate.
  • Forgetting the LPG supplement. It does not appear in the main scale and is added afterwards, which explains many bills judged incoherent.
  • Multiplying by the number of years without reindexing. The amounts rise every 1 July. A total calculated at a frozen scale is always a minimum.
  • Waiting for the assessment notice to discover the amount. It arrives in the months after registration, when the car is already on the drive.

To choose the car itself rather than its tax treatment, our pick of the best city cars compares small engines on the Belgian market, and our electric car guide puts numbers on the 107.18 € flat rate. The comparison tool lets you put several versions side by side before deciding.

Frequently asked questions

From 107.18 € for a displacement not exceeding 750 cc to 2,741.77 € at 20 fiscal horsepower, then 149.56 € per horsepower beyond. The exact amount depends on engine displacement alone. This scale, additional décimes included, is valid from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 and is indexed every 1 July.

There is no formula: there is a seventeen-bracket table. You read the displacement in box P.1 of the registration certificate, find the matching bracket, and get both the fiscal horsepower and the amount. Box P.6 gives fiscal horsepower directly; where the two readings disagree, P.6 is the reference.

No, neither of them. The Walloon annual tax rests on displacement alone. CO2, maximum authorised mass and energy type entered the registration tax in the reform of 1 July 2025, but they were not added to the annual tax.

107.18 € a year. SPW Finances sets the tax on a single basis of four fiscal horsepower or fewer, whatever the motor's power output. An 80 kW electric city car and a 300 kW electric SUV therefore pay the same annual amount.

Yes, an additional road tax is added to the scale amount: 89.16 € up to 7 fiscal horsepower, 148.68 € from 8 to 13 CV, 208.20 € from 14 CV. This supplement is neither indexed nor subject to the additional décime. On a small 6 CV city car it means a 46 % increase.

The registration tax is paid once, on a change of holder, and in Wallonia it combines power in kilowatts, CO2, maximum authorised mass and energy. The road tax comes back every year for as long as the plate lives, and it looks only at displacement. The two are independent: one does not predict the other.

No. Brussels also taxes fiscal horsepower but sets its own amounts, indexed every 1 July and published on MyTax. Flanders applies an environmental logic based on CO2, the Euro standard and fuel, which does not map onto the Walloon scale. The calculator on this page covers Wallonia only.
